Cost by frame material

The frame is usually the biggest single choice you make. Vinyl is the budget pick, wood sits at the top, and fiberglass and composite land in between.

Frame materialPer window, installed
Aluminum$200 to $800
Vinyl$350 to $800
Fiberglass$400 to $1,500
Wood$600 to $2,000
Composite$300 to $2,500

Cost by window style

Standard double-hung windows are the cheapest to replace. Anything that projects from the wall, like a bay, takes more material and more labor.

Window stylePer window, installed
Double-hung$300 to $1,000
Casement$400 to $1,200
Picture$300 to $1,600
Bay$900 to $4,500

What moves the price

  • How many windows you do at once. Most installers price better per window on a whole-house job than on one or two.
  • Insert or full-frame. An insert fits a new window into the existing frame. A full-frame replacement tears out everything down to the rough opening, which costs more but fixes rot and air leaks.
  • Glass package. Double pane is standard. Triple pane, low-E coatings and gas fills add cost and cut energy loss.
  • Labor. Expect roughly $150 to $300 per window for smaller units and up to $800 for large bay or bow windows. Labor is typically about 30% of the project.
  • Surprises. Rotted sills or framing found during removal are priced as extra work.

Questions to ask a window installer

  • Is this quote for insert or full-frame installation?
  • Which brand, product line and glass package are you quoting?
  • Does the price include trim, disposal of the old windows and any permit?
  • What is covered by the manufacturer warranty, and what by your labor warranty?
  • How do you price rot or framing repairs if you find them?
