The word "remodel" covers a lot. New paint, fixtures and a vanity is one job. Moving plumbing and re-tiling everything is another.
| Scope | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Tub to shower conversion | $1,200 to $10,000 |
| Minor or cosmetic update | $2,400 to $10,000 |
| Partial remodel | $6,000 to $25,000 |
| Full remodel | $9,000 to $30,000 and up |
Cost by type of bathroom
| Bathroom | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Half bath or powder room | $1,200 to $15,000 |
| Guest bathroom | $3,500 to $20,000 |
| Primary bathroom | $7,000 to $30,000 |
What moves the price
- Moving plumbing. Keeping the toilet, sink and shower where they are is the single biggest way to hold costs down.
- Tile. Both the material and the labor to set it. Large showers and floor-to-ceiling tile add up fast.
- Fixtures and vanity. Stock sizes cost far less than custom.
- What is behind the walls. Water damage, old wiring or missing waterproofing only show up after demolition.
- Permits. Usually needed when plumbing or electrical work changes.
Luxury remodels with custom work can run well past the ranges above, in some cases over $80,000.
Questions to ask a bathroom remodeler
- Is plumbing staying in place, and if not, what does moving it add?
- How will the shower be waterproofed?
- Which fixtures and tile are included, and what is my allowance if I pick my own?
- Who pulls permits, and are they in the price?
- How long will the bathroom be out of use?
