Home project cost guides
Know what the job should cost before anyone knocks on your door
Plain-English price guides and quick estimators for windows, bathrooms and roofs, so you can tell a fair quote from a padded one.
Figures are national estimates from Fixr.com cost data, January 2026.

Each guide shows what homeowners typically pay, what pushes the price up or down, and a simple estimator you can run in under a minute.

These apply to every project on this site, and to most others too.
- 1Get at least three quotesOne quote tells you a price. Three tell you the market. Make sure each covers the same scope so you can compare them line by line.
- 2Check license and insurance yourselfAsk for the license number and proof of liability coverage, then look them up with your state or county. Do not take a logo on a van as proof.
- 3Get the scope in writingMaterials, brands, model numbers, cleanup, permits and who pulls them. If it is not on paper, assume it is not included.
- 4Never pay the full price up frontA deposit is normal. Paying everything before work starts leaves you with no leverage if something goes wrong.
- 5Ask what happens when they find a surpriseRot under a window, water damage behind tile, soft decking under shingles. Agree in advance how extra work gets priced and approved.
How to use this site
It takes a few minutes and you do not need to give us any personal details.
Read the guide
Start with the cost guide for your project to see the typical range and what is behind it.
Run the numbers
Use the estimator to get a ballpark for a home like yours. It is a range, not a quote.
Compare real quotes
Only local companies can give you an actual price. Where we work with a quote service for your project, you will find a button for it on the guide.
How this site makes money

Common questions
Why are the price ranges so wide?
Because the same project can be a very different job from one house to the next. Size, materials, local labor rates and what turns up once work begins all change the bill. The ranges show what is normal nationally. A local quote is the only way to get your actual number.
Where do the numbers come from?
From published national cost data. Each guide names its source and the date the figures were last updated, with a link so you can check them yourself.
Is BetterHomeBids a contractor?
No. We publish cost information and, for some projects, link to services that connect homeowners with local companies. Any work is done by independent companies that you choose and hire.
What happens if I request quotes through a partner?
You leave this site and fill in a short form on the partner's website. Companies that serve your area may then contact you by phone or email with pricing, so only submit a request when you actually want to hear from them.
Do I have to hire one of the companies?
No. Compare what you get, ask questions, and walk away if nothing fits.
